Do you struggle to balance all aspects of your life? Does it feel like when you excel in one area, everything else falls behind? Perhaps you're crushing it at work but neglecting your social life and self-care. If this sounds familiar, you're not alone.
The solution lies in establishing effective routines that help you manage various aspects of your life without overwhelming you. These six monthly routines take only 15-20 minutes each and can transform how you organize your life.
You can schedule all six on one day each month, or spread them throughout the month as I prefer to do. Let's dive into these game-changing routines!
1. Money Management Routine
This should be your first priority at the beginning of each month. It involves handling bills, budgeting, saving, and investing to ensure financial peace of mind for the rest of the month.
Step 1: Pay yourself first. Allocate 10% of your income to a personal fund—whether it's a recurring deposit or a separate bank account. This money is yours to use however you wish.
Step 2: Check for pending payments. If you're a freelancer or content creator, review any outstanding invoices that need to be sent or followed up on.
Step 3: Pay your bills. Simplify this process by consolidating all payments on a single app or portal. Consider aligning payment dates to fall within the same week, especially for credit cards, so you can handle them all at once.
Step 4: Save and invest. Set up systematic investment plans (SIPs) that automatically deduct from your account on a specific date. Managing all investments through a single platform makes tracking and managing your money much easier.
Step 5: Plan for upcoming expenses. Set aside funds for any anticipated costs, upcoming trips, or major purchases. Analyze last month's spending by reviewing bank and credit card statements to identify areas where you might need to cut back.
2. Work Management Routine
This routine helps you assess your professional progress and align your work with your long-term goals.
Analyze pain points. Identify challenges you faced last month and outline steps to address them in the coming month. This might involve outsourcing certain tasks or reorganizing your workflow.
Celebrate achievements and learning experiences. We often forget to acknowledge how far we've come. Taking time to recognize your accomplishments provides motivation to stay on track.
Assess what's not working. Review tasks, clients, or projects that don't align with your long-term goals and consider necessary adjustments.
Review skills and plan for growth. Reflect on skills you developed last month and plan what you want to learn in the coming month to keep your mind active and growing.
3. Health Assessment Routine
This isn't your fitness or nutrition routine but rather a monthly check-in to prevent health issues before they become serious problems.
Track your measurements. Monitor your weight and body measurements using a spreadsheet or app. Even if you're not actively trying to change your weight, tracking helps identify sudden fluctuations that might indicate underlying health issues.
Monitor health metrics. Keep tabs on sleep patterns, heart health, fitness levels, and physical activity. A fitness tracker can simplify this process by automatically collecting data.
Adjust your lifestyle as needed. Identify any issues that arose last month and plan adjustments to address them. If you notice sleep problems or unwanted weight changes, consider modifications to your routine.
Check for physical changes. Examine your body for any unusual marks, pain, injuries, or patterns like sudden hair loss or changes in moles. For women, monthly breast and vaginal self-exams are essential.
Manage appointments and medications. Schedule doctor appointments and check if you need to restock medications or supplements.
Assess your fitness progress. Evaluate whether your current workout plan aligns with your goals and make adjustments if necessary.
Organize your kitchen. Remove unhealthy items from your cabinets, plan meals, and stock up on essentials for the month ahead.
4. Mental Health Routine
We often neglect our mental wellbeing while making time for everything else. Dedicate one hour monthly to assess your mental state.
Journal about your month. Reflect on what energized you, what drained you, and what caused stress. This provides insights into what's working and what isn't.
Evaluate if you need professional support. Determine if there are stressors you can't handle alone and schedule therapy sessions if needed.
Review your self-care practices. Consider whether you took enough time off for your mental health last month. Did you take regular breaks and schedule self-reflection time?
Plan mental health days. Mark specific days in your calendar dedicated solely to relaxation and recovery from work stress. I find that one day every two weeks helps prevent burnout.
5. Beauty and Personal Care Routine
This routine ensures you look and feel your best throughout the month, though it might take longer than 15 minutes to complete.
Stock up on essentials. Check your skincare, body care, hair care, and makeup items. Replenish whatever needs replacing and dispose of empty containers.
Schedule appointments. Book time for manicures, pedicures, facials, massages, and haircuts (though these might not all be monthly needs).
Maintain feminine hygiene. Wash undergarments with regular detergent plus an antiseptic solution, then dry them in the sun to kill bacteria and prevent infections.
6. Home Maintenance Routine
This routine prevents the accumulation of dirt and clutter in your living space.
Schedule deep cleaning. Arrange for thorough bathroom and balcony cleaning, whether you do it yourself or hire help.
Restock cleaning supplies. Check and replenish soaps, detergents, and bathroom cleaners.
Organize your kitchen. Ensure nothing is spoiling in the back of cabinets and dispose of expired items properly.
Deep clean your home. Wipe corners, remove cobwebs, wash foot mats, vacuum curtains and sofas to eliminate dust.
Reorganize as needed. Focus on one cabinet or cupboard each month to maintain organization throughout the year.
Care for plants. Prune leaves, add soil, and ensure they get adequate sunlight.
Starting Your Routine Journey
If you're new to creating routines, begin with the most chaotic area of your life. When I started, my finances were my biggest challenge—I was earning money but spending it without a plan for saving or investing.
Think of this as a six-month project. Create and perfect one routine before moving to the next. Eventually, these routines will take just 15-20 minutes each month while giving you much more control over your life.
